Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty adjusts the shape of the nose, including the bridge, tip, alae, and the length and angle of the nose. JAYJUN Plastic Surgery explains nasal bridge and tip surgery, corrections by nose shape, alar reduction and revision surgery, and the rhinoplasty approach page describes 3D-CT analysis and one-on-one planning. Operating time ranges from 10 minutes to 2 hours depending on the method.
How rhinoplasty is planned
Nasal bridge and tip
Nasal bridge augmentation
Rhinoplasty that places an implant or your own tissue over the nasal bone when a low, flat bridge lacks dimension, using an open approach. Takes about 1 hour under sedation; recovery is 5 days.
View detailsNasal tip surgery
Refines the shape and height of the nasal tip by tying alar cartilage or adding your own cartilage, for a tip that is long, short or low. Takes about 1 hour under sedation; recovery is 7 days.

Corrections by nose shape
Bulbous nose correction
Corrects a bulbous nose by reshaping cartilage and trimming the fat layer beneath the skin to suit nasal width and skin thickness. Takes 1.5 hours under sedation; stitches out after 1 week.
View detailsHump nose correction
Smooths a humped nasal dorsum by trimming bone and cartilage through an incision inside the nose, adding lateral osteotomy in severe cases. Takes about 1 hour under sedation, or general anesthesia if bone is cut.
View detailsLong nose correction
For a drooping, arrow-shaped long nose: raises and ties the alar cartilage, shortens the long septum and supports the tip with your own cartilage. Takes 1-2 hours under sedation; recovery is 7 days.
View detailsShort nose correction
For a short nose with an upturned tip and visible nostrils: nasal tip cartilage is trimmed and reconnected lower to adjust length and tip angle. Takes 1-2 hours under sedation; stitches out after 1 week.
View detailsRetracted alar rim correction
Corrects a nose with lifted nostril rims that show too much, by lowering the skin inside the nostril and reinforcing the edge with your own cartilage. Takes 1-2 hours under sedation; stitches out after 1 week.

Alar reduction
Alar reduction
Narrows wide, flared nostrils by reducing skin tissue when the skin is thick, or tying the inner side when only the area below the nostrils is wide. Takes 30 minutes under sedation; stitches out after 1 week.
View detailsNon-incisional alar reduction
Reduces the nostrils without an incision by passing a special thread through a pinhole below the nostril and tying the two sides together. Takes 10 minutes under sedation, with no stitch removal and daily life after 5 days.

Revision rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty for noses that are unsatisfying in function or shape after a first surgery, planned after analyzing the cause with 3D-CT. Takes 1.5 hours under sedation with same-day discharge.
View detailsRevision Rhinoplasty with Your Own Tissue
Revision rhinoplasty using only your own tissue, such as dermis and cartilage, without artificial materials; considered by those wary of implant complications. Takes 1.5 hours under sedation; recovery is 7 days.
View detailsContracted nose revision
Revision surgery for a contracted nose, where scar tissue after rhinoplasty has hardened and lifted the tip, releasing it and correcting the tip angle. Takes 1.5 hours under sedation; stitches out after 1 week.

After jaw surgery and cleft-related
Rhinoplasty after double-jaw surgery
Rhinoplasty after double-jaw surgery rebalances a nose that has changed shape or become lower to suit the new face. Done 2-3 months after jaw surgery once swelling has subsided; surgery takes 1.5 hours.
View detailsCleft-related rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty to correct nasal deformity from cleft lip and palate, usually done after the nose finishes growing; with cartilage grafting, from at least age 14, generally 15. Surgery takes 1-2 hours.

Frequently asked questions
What types of rhinoplasty are there?
Rhinoplasty is divided into nasal bridge augmentation, nasal tip surgery, corrections for dorsal hump, bulbous, long, short and alar-retracted noses, alar reduction, rhinoplasty after double-jaw surgery, cleft-related rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty. The method depends on the concern, such as bridge height, tip shape and length, or alar width. The approach to planning is described on the rhinoplasty approach page.
When can revision rhinoplasty be done?
Revision rhinoplasty is generally described as possible about six months after the first surgery, once the overall tissue has softened. When inflammation or contracture has occurred, surgery is done after the cause of the inflammation is removed and the scar tissue has softened, and an earlier date, where possible for the tissue condition or type of surgery, is decided at consultation. The cause is checked with 3D-CT analysis before the surgery is planned.
Can revision rhinoplasty be done without an artificial implant?
Autologous revision rhinoplasty uses only the patient's own tissue, such as dermis and cartilage, without artificial materials. Septal and ear cartilage are among the tissues used, and the method is considered when an artificial implant is a concern or has caused trouble before. Surgery takes 1 hour 30 minutes under sedation anesthesia, with same-day discharge and stitch removal after 1 week.
How do incisional and non-incisional alar reduction differ?
Standard alar reduction cuts the alae to reduce their size when the skin is thick, and ties the inner side together when only the area below the nostrils is wide. Non-incisional alar reduction passes a special thread through a needle hole below the nostrils and ties the two sides together; it takes 10 minutes, needs no stitch removal and allows daily life after 5 days. Standard alar reduction takes 30 minutes, with stitch removal after 1 week.
What are hospitalization and recovery like after rhinoplasty?
The rhinoplasty procedures described on these pages are all same-day discharge, and anesthesia is mostly sedation. Stitches are usually removed after 1 week and daily life is described as possible after 5 to 7 days, but bleeding and bruising can occur and recovery varies with each person's condition. General anesthesia is used when bone cuts (osteotomy) are done for a dorsal hump, and rhinoplasty after double-jaw surgery is done under sedation or general anesthesia.
