What Are Cleft Lip and Palate?
If the first repair is successful and the lip retains its shape during growth, no further correction may be needed. However, the lip can become misshapen as the child grows, leading to a second operation.
Even when the cleft is properly closed and repaired in infancy, nasal deformity may develop during growth. Cleft lip repair usually corrects the lip shape in childhood, but nasal surgery is best performed once nasal growth is largely complete.

To correct the lip shape, primary cleft lip repair is generally performed three months after placement of an intraoral appliance.

Timing of Surgery
Definitive correction is generally performed after nasal growth is complete, although the timing remains a matter of debate.
It may be combined with alveolar cleft surgery. However, procedures involving dissection for cartilage grafting or similar work are generally performed no earlier than age 14, and usually at age 15 or older.
