Why ptosis correction should be viewed as an independent eyelid procedure rather than a simple add-on surgery

Recently, as the number of people who want a clear impression and natural eyes increases, interest in eye plastic surgery is also increasing. In particular, interest in ‘ptosis correction’ surgery is growing among people considering eye plastic surgery, but many people misunderstand this as simply an additional procedure to increase the cost of surgery. However, ptosis correction serves a different purpose from double-eyelid surgery. Double-eyelid surgery creates an eyelid crease to define the eyes and change their appearance, whereas ptosis correction focuses on improving eye-opening function. It adjusts the function of the levator palpebrae superioris, the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid, so that more of the pupil is visible.
If you are weak in opening your eyes, your eyelids may cover your pupils, making you look sleepy or tired. Additionally, if you develop the habit of unconsciously using your forehead muscles to open your eyes, this can cause forehead wrinkles to deepen. In this case, if the ability to open the eyes is improved through ptosis correction, a clearer impression can be expected, and excessive use of the forehead muscles can be reduced, creating a natural facial expression.
Especially, if one has ptosis symptoms or if the upper eyelid largely covers the pupil, ptosis correction may be recommended for functional improvement. On the other hand, if there is sufficient strength to open the eyes and no particular functional issues, ptosis correction is not always necessary. Even if the eyes look the same, the surgical method may vary depending on the condition of the muscles that open the eyes, the thickness of the eyelids, and the degree of skin sagging, so an accurate diagnosis should be conducted first.
Park Cheolheum, director of JAYJUN Plastic Surgery (plastic surgery specialist), advised, “The necessity of ptosis correction must be determined depending on the individual’s eye condition. In fact, in some cases, creating a double eyelid line alone is sufficient, but in cases where functional problems are present, ptosis correction should be considered together to expect highly satisfactory results.”
When it comes to plastic surgery, it is important to consider not only cosmetic changes but also functional improvements.
Director Park said, “If you are planning ptosis correction, it is advisable to accurately understand your eye condition through sufficient consultation and detailed diagnosis and make a surgical plan with a specialist with abundant clinical experience.” The doctor emphasized, “You must approach ptosis correction with the understanding that it is an independent function improvement surgery, not an additional option to double eyelid surgery, to lead to highly satisfactory results.”
