Appearance as an advantage: why male rhinoplasty needs a different approach from female rhinoplasty

As men's interest in appearance management increases, the proportion of male customers in the plastic surgery market is also steadily increasing. Among them, rhinoplasty is one of the areas that men are most interested in. Since the nose, located in the center of the face, is a key part that determines the impression, a relatively small change can be expected to improve the overall appearance and impression.

In the past, there was a strong view of plastic surgery as a female-centered culture, but recently the atmosphere has changed significantly. As the importance of external image increases in employment and business environments as well as various platforms such as SNS and video content, the number of men naturally investing in personal grooming and appearance is increasing. Plastic surgery is often considered to create a neater and more sophisticated impression rather than simply to look handsome.

Men consider rhinoplasty for various reasons. Compared with women, men more often have structural nasal concerns such as a dorsal hump or a crooked nose related to injury or congenital factors. A prominent hump can create a strong, sharp impression, while a broad, bulbous tip may look heavy. A nose that deviates to one side can disrupt facial balance, and a long nose may make a person appear older. Because nasal shape strongly affects appearance, demand continues for changes suited to each individual.

Recent trends in male rhinoplasty emphasize natural, balanced designs rather than excessive height or elaborate shapes. Earlier approaches focused on raising the nasal bridge; today, facial shape and proportions are considered to enhance a masculine appearance. Many men prefer a clean, straight line from between the eyebrows to the nasal tip, rather than the curved profile often requested in female rhinoplasty.

Also, recently, there is a clear tendency to place more importance on results that make the image look neat without damaging the original facial atmosphere, rather than changes that give a ‘surgery look’. Rather than unconditionally pursuing flashy changes, the key is to create a sophisticated impression while maintaining individuality and naturalness.

Park Kisoo, director of JAYJUN Plastic Surgery (plastic surgery specialist), said, “Recently, male customers often consider natural changes that harmonize with their faces more important than simply increasing nasal height.” The doctor added, “As appearance management has become a field of self-management, male rhinoplasty is also developing into a more specialized and personalized form.”

Director Park continued, “Male rhinoplasty is not just a surgery to increase nasal height, but also requires consideration of the overall proportions and impression of the face, so a design that suits each individual’s characteristics is important.” The doctor also advised, “Rather than blindly following the trendy nose shape, making a plan in a direction that suits you through sufficient consultation and detailed analysis can help increase satisfaction.”
