Recently, as beauty trends aimed at providing natural results and reducing recovery burden have spread, ‘closed rhinoplasty’ is attracting attention among those considering rhinoplasty. Closed rhinoplasty is characterized by the fact that the surgery is performed through the inside of the nose without making an incision in the columella (nose pillar), which reduces the burden of scarring as there is no external incision.
Unlike the existing open rhinoplasty, which is advantageous for securing visibility but requires an external incision, the closed method has the advantage of relatively fast recovery and easy return to daily life because it does not incise the external skin. In particular, preference is increasing for patients who are sensitive to scars or who want natural changes.
However, closed rhinoplasty has the limitation of limited visibility because the surgery is performed inside the nose. Accordingly, a high level of anatomical understanding is required along with a detailed analysis of each patient's internal nasal structure. If various factors such as the cartilage structure of the nose, skin thickness, and existing nose shape are not comprehensively considered, it may be difficult to obtain the desired results.
Additionally, the closed method is not suitable for all patients. In cases where significant correction of the shape of the tip of the nose is required or when structural deformation is involved, open surgery may be more effective. Therefore, rather than simply selecting a surgical method based on the presence or absence of scars, it is important to select an appropriate surgical method that suits the individual's nose condition and goals.
Park Kisoo, director of JAYJUN Plastic Surgery (plastic surgery specialist), said, “Rhinoplasty is a surgery in which the stability and precision of the process are as important as the result, so sufficient prior consultation and systematic surgical planning must be established first.” He also emphasized, “Especially in the case of closed rhinoplasty, precise manipulation is required in a limited field of view, so having the surgery performed by skilled medical staff is a key factor in determining the completeness of the results.”
He continued, “Pre-surgery consultation should go beyond simple design consultation and provide a diagnosis of the internal structure of the nose as well as a sufficient explanation of the possible range of surgery, expected results, recovery process, etc. Through this, patients can set realistic expectations appropriate for their condition, and post-surgery satisfaction can also be increased.”
Closed rhinoplasty has the advantage of less scarring and relatively quick recovery, but stable results can be expected only when precise anatomical analysis and advanced techniques are combined. Therefore, it is most important to establish a personalized surgical plan through sufficient consultation with medical staff and carefully decide whether or not to have surgery.
