If you want natural improvement in closed rhinoplasty, structural diagnosis comes first.

The nose, located in the center of the face, is a key part that determines the balance of facial features, and even small changes can make a big difference in the overall impression. Depending on the height and length of the nose, the direction of the tip, and the line of the bridge of the nose, it is possible to create a variety of moods, from a sophisticated image to a soft impression, and has consistently received high attention among plastic surgery procedures. In particular, recently, there has been a growing tendency to prefer natural improvements that harmonize with an individual's facial proportions rather than excessive changes.

Rhinoplasty is largely divided into open and closed methods. Open rhinoplasty is performed by making an incision in the columella area of the nose column. It has the advantage of being able to directly check and correct the cartilage structure and internal tissues as it is easy to secure a surgical field of view, so it is suitable for cases that require elaborate manipulation such as a crooked nose, hooked nose, severe asymmetry correction, or reoperation. However, there is a possibility that a scar will remain at the incision site, the range of detachment is wide, swelling and bruising may appear relatively large, and the recovery period may be relatively long.

Closed rhinoplasty is performed by making an incision inside the nose, and is characterized by almost no scars on the outside. The incision range is not large, so there is relatively little tissue damage, minimal swelling and bruising after surgery, and it has the advantage of being able to return to daily life quickly. It is suitable for cases where relatively natural changes are desired, such as fine adjustment of the tip of the nose, reinforcement of the bridge of the nose, or light line correction.

However, since closed rhinoplasty is performed from the inside with a limited view, there may be limits to high-level structural correction. A more careful approach is needed in cases where the internal structure of the nose is complex, cartilage damage is severe, or there are adhesions from previous surgery. Therefore, rather than simply selecting a surgical method based on scarring or recovery period, it is important to decide on a method that suits the individual's nasal structure and improvement purpose.

Park Kisoo, director of JAYJUN Plastic Surgery (plastic surgery specialist), explained, “Closed rhinoplasty has the advantage of less burden on external scars and faster recovery, but as the field of view is limited, the surgeon’s skill and understanding of anatomy are very important.” He added, “We must carefully analyze the internal structure of the nose, the thickness of cartilage, and the condition of the nasal septum through 3D-CT imaging, etc., and then establish a personalized surgical plan to increase safety and satisfaction at the same time.”

Director Park went on to say, “Rhinoplasty is not simply a surgery to increase the height, but a design that considers the overall proportions and harmony of the face is the key,” and advised, “A comprehensive diagnosis of skin thickness, cartilage elasticity, nasal septum support, and functional factors must be performed before deciding on the surgical method to reduce the possibility of side effects and expect long-term stable results.”
