Eyes are a large part of the face, and their overall image and impression vary greatly depending on their shape and size. In particular, if your eyes are small or look cramped, it can give you a sleepy or tired impression, so an increasing number of people are trying to improve this. In these cases, it is a good idea to consider eye-opening surgery as a way to make the eyes look less cramped and create a more defined, open impression.
Eye-opening surgery helps expand the horizontal and vertical length of the eyes, making the eyes appear larger and clearer. Through various incisions such as inner, upper, outer, and lower, the proportions and balance of the eyes are improved. The key is not simply to make the eyes bigger but to adjust the eye shape according to the individual's eye structure and face image.
Eye-opening surgery is largely divided into inner, upper, outer, and lower incisions. Inner and upper incisions can improve the Mongolian fold covering the inner and upper parts of the eye, so they are often performed together when the double eyelid line is hidden at the inner corner and looks cramped. If the Mongolian fold is severe, naturally opening it can make the eyes appear clearer and give a refreshing impression.
Lateral and lower canthoplasty adjust the direction and length of the outer eye corners and are suitable when the corners turn upward or the outer part of the eyes is short and looks cramped. Extending the horizontal length through lateral canthoplasty and gently lowering the angle of the outer corners through lower canthoplasty can create a softer impression. In particular, combined lateral and lower canthoplasty tends to produce substantial improvement and is considered a way to increase satisfaction with changes in eye shape.
Recently, following the trend of natural plastic surgery that emphasizes natural charms rather than excessive changes, the number of cases in which only eye-opening surgery is performed is increasing. However, delicate design and accurate fixation are important for eye-opening surgery. If it is excessively open, the red part of the conjunctiva may appear overly exposed or the lacrimal lake at the inner corner of the eye may appear severely exposed, and side effects such as the ㄷ-shaped (squared-off) corner of the eye may occur. Conversely, if the fixation is not sufficient, it may reattach over time, resulting in lower satisfaction.
Therefore, it is essential for canthoplasty to be a customized surgery that is designed in a harmonious direction after accurately analyzing the individual's eye condition and structural characteristics. Accurately diagnosing eye problems through sufficient consultation and creating a plan that takes into account the balance of the entire face can lead to natural and highly satisfying results.
Park Cheolheum, director of JAYJUN Plastic Surgery (plastic surgery specialist), explained, “Eye-opening surgery is not simply a surgery to enlarge the eyes. Satisfaction is high when it is designed with comprehensive consideration of the individual’s eye structure, Mongolian folds, angle of the corners of the eye, skin thickness, etc.” He added, “Excessive opening can actually harm the impression, so customized surgery that takes into account harmony with the entire face is more important than anything else.”
