The so-called ‘bulbous nose’, which gives the impression of a round nose due to its large and blunt tip, was in the past considered an element symbolizing a cute and gentle image. However, as recent beauty standards favor clear facial features and a straight, sophisticated look, interest in correcting the nose to create a straight nose bridge and sharp tip is steadily increasing. The nose, located in the center of the face, is a key part that determines the overall balance and image. Just changing the tip of the nose and the nasal alae can significantly change the impression, which is why the number of inquiries about correction of the bulbous nose is increasing.
Even though bulbous nose looks similar in appearance, the causes are not all the same. In reality, a bulbous nose is caused by a combination of various factors, including skin thickness, level of development of subcutaneous fat and soft tissue, and the cartilage structure that supports the tip of the nose. Rather than judging based solely on the external appearance of the nose, it is important to take a customized approach based on an accurate analysis of the internal structure.
If the skin or soft tissue around the tip of the nose and the nasal alae is thick, the method is to reduce the thickness of the skin by removing excessively developed fat or soft tissue. If the cartilage at the tip of the nose is spread out or lacks support, giving a round and blunt impression, the key is to gather the gaping cartilage and reinforce the supporting structure of the tip of the nose to create a clearer and more stable shape.
There are quite a few mixed-type bulbous noses in which these two factors act simultaneously, so if the same surgical method is applied simply because the tip of the nose looks round, satisfaction may decrease and side effects may occur more easily, so caution is required.
It is recommended to comprehensively analyze skin thickness, soft tissue distribution, as well as the location and shape of cartilage through 3D CT scan before surgery and establish a personalized surgical plan based on this. This precise diagnostic process helps reduce unnecessary resection and produce more natural results.
Kang Hyungjoo, director of JAYJUN Plastic Surgery (plastic surgery specialist), advised, “Bulbous nose surgery is not just about making the nose smaller, but also a process of balancing the tip of the nose and the nasal alae, taking into account the harmony of the entire face.” He added, “Selecting a method that suits the individual’s nose type through accurate structural analysis through 3D CT and sufficient consultation before surgery is a key factor in increasing satisfaction.”
He added, “It is most important to draw up a surgical plan that suits you through consultation with an experienced specialist.”
