Recent rhinoplasty trends are changing to emphasize a natural design that harmonizes with the entire face rather than a high and flashy shape like in the past. The nose is a structure located at the center of the face and has a great influence on the formation of impression and image, so it is important to design it in consideration of the proportion of the individual's facial features and mood, rather than simply improving the height. In general, women prefer a nose with a soft and sophisticated curved line, while men often prefer a straight line with a clear T-zone extending from the forehead to the tip of the nose. However, recently, there has been a growing trend to look for customized designs tailored to the individual's image and desired atmosphere rather than gender classification.
Following these changes, establishing a surgical plan tailored to each individual's nose structure has become more important than anything else in rhinoplasty. This is because a natural result can be expected only when the design is decided upon by comprehensively considering the length of the nose, skin thickness, condition of the cartilage, and proportion with the facial contour. Unconditional height increase or uniform design can create an unnatural impression, so caution is required.
Material selection in rhinoplasty is also a key factor that determines outcomes. It is advisable to first design the height and angles to be in balance with the entire face, and then choose the suitable material according to the patient's condition and goals. The most commonly used ear cartilage has the advantages of being thin and flexible for detailed adjustments and leaving minimal scarring due to its inconspicuous collection site.
Nasal septal cartilage, which can be harvested from inside the nose, is stronger than ear cartilage and is advantageous in stably supporting the tip of the nose. However, if ear cartilage or septal cartilage has already been used, or if the tip of the nose needs to be raised more, costal cartilage may be used. Costal cartilage is divided into donor ribs and autologous ribs, and when using autologous rib cartilage, careful management of scars at the harvest site and recovery process is required.
Gangnam JAYJUN Plastic Surgery Clinic Director Park Kisoo (plastic surgery specialist) said, “Rhinoplasty is not simply a surgery to change the shape, but a process of accurately analyzing an individual’s structural characteristics and finding a 1:1 customized design that fits them,” and emphasized, “In order to select the surgical method and material appropriate for the patient, detailed examination and sufficient consultation before surgery are essential.”
He added, “The most important factor in increasing satisfaction is setting a direction that suits your face through sufficient consultation with a specialist with extensive clinical experience.”
The recent rhinoplasty trend that emphasizes naturalness and harmony is leading to a trend that emphasizes long-term impression improvement and stable results rather than short-term changes, and the importance of a careful approach is also being highlighted.
