Unlike in the past, when one would just accept it as natural aging and just live with it even if one's appearance changes as one gets older or causes some inconvenience, the interest in plastic surgery among the middle-aged and the elderly is also growing.

The average life expectancy and level of health have increased significantly compared to the past, and as the social and economic activities of the middle-aged and the elderly are extended, the need for self-care is also increasing, and the need to look younger than their peers is increasing. More and more people are considering plastic surgery to maintain their appearance. In particular, an increasing number of people are actively considering middle-aged eye plastic surgery to improve the aged appearance and discomfort around the eyes due to drooping eyelids or senile ptosis.

Middle-aged eye plastic surgery can be classified as one of the cosmetic surgeries for the youthful appearance, and upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery are traditionally representative of middle-aged eye surgery. Upper eyelid surgery, also called ‘middle-aged double eyelid surgery,’ is a surgery that makes an incision in the skin along the double eyelid line, excises part of the skin tissue sagging due to aging, and corrects sagging eyelids.

Upper eyelid surgery is in high demand because it solves sagging skin and double eyelids at the same time, allowing for a clear and bright impression. Lower eyelid surgery is a surgery to improve the area under the eyes. When the skin under the eyes is saggy and the tear trough is prominent due to fat pockets, it is a surgery that can brighten and improve the impression by evening it out.

Subbrow lift and forehead lift can also be considered eye plastic surgery for middle-aged people. In a subbrow lift, the skin is incised along the line under the eyebrows and part of the thick eyelid skin is removed to reduce sagging skin. It is a surgery to raise the eyelids, and is effective enough on its own, but if sagging eyelids are particularly severe, a more pronounced improvement effect can be expected when combined with upper eyelid surgery.

If you have a habit of using your forehead due to weakened ability to open your eyes and drooping eyebrows, and this has resulted in worsening wrinkles on your forehead, you may want to consider a forehead lift. When the forehead and eyebrows sag, the eyelids become thicker and the space between the eyes and eyebrows becomes closer. In this case, double eyelid surgery alone can make the person look stuffy and fierce. So, in this case, a natural change is possible by performing a forehead lift, which involves making an incision toward the forehead hairline to lift and fix the forehead and eyebrows.

In this way, various middle-aged eye plastic surgery should be considered depending on the individual's needs, skin condition, degree of aging, etc., and it is important to plan the surgical method and approach to reflect individual differences.

Park Hyungjoon, director of JAYJUN Plastic Surgery, said, "Because the skin around the eyes is thin and the area with a lot of movement, aging appears first after middle age. Also, as you get older and your eyelids sag, cosmetic dissatisfaction can occur, but it can also cause functional discomfort such as decreased vision, irritation and skin breakdown around the eyes, and dry eyes." He added, "Middle-aged eye surgery is a good way to improve these symptoms, but indiscriminately pulling or excising too much without considering harmony with the entire face can make the appearance harsher and unnatural, so this must always be kept in mind," he emphasized.

Director Park continued, “Middle-aged plastic surgery has a variety of factors to consider, such as skin thickness, sagging, eye opening strength, and aging, so it is best to receive sufficient consultation and establish a customized plan through a medical staff with extensive clinical experience.”
