Aging can bring many changes under the eyes, including puffiness, darkening, hollowness and sagging.
How can these concerns be addressed?
Dr. Park Hyungjoon is back on camera after a while, and today we use his eyes as an easy-to-follow example.
First, the most common procedures: under-eye fat repositioning and lower blepharoplasty.
Both procedures are designed to improve the area beneath the eyes.
Both under-eye fat repositioning and lower blepharoplasty improve the under-eye contour and address the tear trough.
However, if the skin or muscle under the eyes is very loose or sagging, fat repositioning alone may not be enough.
In such cases, lower blepharoplasty can also improve sagging skin and muscle.
Under-eye fat repositioning moves the fat through an incision in the conjunctiva, without an incision in the skin.
Lower blepharoplasty, on the other hand, removes under-eye fat through a skin incision while lifting the sagging skin.
When comparing the two procedures,
lower blepharoplasty is a more extensive operation, with greater risks, more scarring and a longer recovery,
but it can offer greater improvement than fat repositioning.
However, if fat repositioning can address the concern, lower blepharoplasty is not necessary.
If about 70% improvement can be expected with under-eye fat repositioning,
we consider lower blepharoplasty an option for someone aiming for up to 100% improvement.
Dr. Park Hyungjoon says he would choose under-eye fat repositioning.
As you weigh the pros and cons of each approach and consider your choice,
please feel free to share any questions or thoughts. Thank you.
